I was bought this book for Christmas and would like to recommend it as a very good read. I have to admit I normally would avoid books with such titles claiming they have discovered a certain ‘secret’ but as I have previously read and enjoyed books by J John I was interested to read this one. Finding true contentment which is written in smaller print under the main heading is definitely a better title in my opinion.

The book is a study of the Beatitudes and I certainly found it very easy to read and immensely informative, challenging and practical to every day life. It is one of those books that as you are reading you can’t help but think of friends that you would love to give the book to, as you know they would find it a joy to read.

The book deals with how the Beatitudes (Jesus’ teaching in Matthew) relate to us as individuals, our family, friends and work colleagues and to the wider world with very wise suggestions of how we can put them into practice in our daily lives.

Happy reading!

The Happiness Secret - J John

Sometime last autumn, God woke me up in the middle of the night with the clear idea to start a group to read the bible in a year. I’ve been doing this on my own for the last 27 years with varying degrees of success. So, in obedience, I started to advertise this in church and on Facebook. I did some research on the Internet to find a reading plan that looked easy to follow. I have edited this and now send it out to all those who have joined my group.  Alongside an increasing number from Christ Church and the UK, there are people in Cameroon, Florida, Kuwait, South Africa and New Zealand, reading the same passages each day, praying for each other and sharing insights and questions by email.  Here are some comments from those who joined the challenge…..

Reading the Bible in a Year challenge has given me the incentive to really get to grips with reading the Bible.  As I am reading some of the verses for the first time, I can hardly wait for the next instalment! I have started to use the psalms in my prayers and sometimes the proverb is helpful throughout the day. Glenis

It is really exciting to be doing this challenge with a group of people, some who are on the other side of the world. I do enjoy the comments, questions and answers from the email group.  The plan is well balanced with OT and NT portions, a few verses from Proverbs (always hard to read without getting indigestion!) and a Psalm.  It’s great seeing how the Gospel links with the Genesis readings sometimes. I am using the New Living Translation and find it easy to follow, but I have to refer to my NIV study Bible and the Lion Handbook to the Bible, when I don't understand the text.  It is making me think for myself - a good thing - and I am really looking forward to it each day.  I feel as if I am being drawn in to a special place with God and with those on

the same path.  The prayer support may have something to do with it?!  Penny

My recurring New Year's Resolution is to be more consistent and faithful in bible study - but it's so easy to allow the pressures of work, family and church to displace quiet time with God. Jenny's "bible in a year" is a big enough task to command attention in my day, clearly-defined so I can't quibble with myself over whether or not it's done, and there's the additional discipline of shared accountability. I am hoping that there's going to be shared insight, too. I am actually excited about bible study for the next twelve months and that's a great feeling!  David

It’s never too late to join. Just send me an email.
